A contact lens is a thin, curved lens that is placed on the tear film that covers the surface of your eye. The Contact Lens is naturally clear, but it is frequently tinted to make it easier for wearers to handle. Today's contact lenses are either hard or soft. Most people now wear the latter, but contact lenses were once glass blown!
While contact lenses may appear to be a recent addition to eye care, they actually have a long and illustrious history, beginning with Leonardo da Vinci and Rene Descartes.
However, it wasn't until the late 1800s that a German glassblower created a lens that could be seen through and tolerated, and a German ophthalmologist invented and fitted the first contact lens, which could be worn for a few hours at a time.
