The Carboxy Groups At Position 1 And 3 Of Benzene Are Substituted In Isophthalic Acid By Benzene
Isophthalic Acid

Industrial production of Isophthalic Acid, an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, involves the oxidation of m-xylene. Commercially, it is largely employed as a part of the copolymer of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which is used in bottle resins and, to a much lesser extent, for fibres. Because isophthalic acid decreases PET's crystallinity, bottles are produced more quickly and with better clarity. The second primary usage of Isophthalic Acid is as a constituent of superior alkyd and polyester resins for industrial coatings and unsaturated polyesters for applications in fiberglass-reinforced plastics.

There have always been inequities in Isophthalic Acid because of the small number of producers. However, investments have been made in m-xylene since 2019, and new capacity is expected to start operating in India by the end of 2023. As a result, the PIA market ought to have enough of supply during the coming years. Additionally, the current high energy prices have lowered prospects for quick expansion in Europe and North America.
