Radiation Is Used In Brachytherapy To Treat Cancer By Placing A Radiation Source Near Affected Areas
Brachytherapy

Many different forms of cancer can be treated using Brachytherapy, a form of radiotherapy. When used to treat prostate cancer, it is often referred to as "seed therapy" or "internal radiotherapy". An essential component of cancer treatment is radiotherapy. It kills cancer cells by using radiation to target them and prevent their division and growth. Around 4 out of 10 cancer patients receive some form of radiotherapy as part of their care.

There are two basic types of radiotherapy:

·       External beam radiotherapy (EBRT)

·       Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy works by directing a radiation source at the cancerous tumour within the body or just adjacent to it. This makes it possible to precisely focus the radiation in order to deliver the dose necessary to destroy the cancer cells in the tumour. This "tailored approach" also lessens the possibility of needless harm to nearby healthy tissue and organs, which lowers the possibility of adverse effects.
