Let’s See the History of Spandex
Spandex

Spandex is an important fiber due to its unique properties, including its high elasticity, shape retention, comfort, versatility, and use in industrial applications. These properties make it a popular choice for a variety of clothing applications, from sportswear to lingerie, and have established it as a staple in the fashion and textile industries. The history of Spandex is very fascinating. Chemical engineers first started to develop synthetic rubber substitutes during World War II. Of course, a modern man could find this weird. Why would anyone want to go over to synthetic rubber substitutes?

The engineers, though, had good reasons. To begin with, the war was using the majority of the rubber that was available, leaving industrial enterprises with insufficient supplies to compete over. As a result, the price of rubber started to vary and became extremely unpredictable. Spandex were therefore actively looking for viable rubber substitutes. Dupont was one of the businesses leading this scientific search. Early in the 1950s, one of its textile scientists, Joseph Shiver, discovered a method of converting an intermediate fibre called Dacron into a very extensible fibre that could endure high temperatures while maintaining its shape. This was the company's first major achievement.
