The Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose diets decreased the postprandial rise in blood glucose and enhanced the viscosity of the small intestine contents. In comparison to the obese control, the food efficiency ratio was higher with HPMC feeding, and urine excretion of glucose and ketone bodies was decreased. The two Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose groups had superior glucose control as seen by lower glycated haemoglobin, lighter kidneys, and a smaller area under the glucose tolerance test curve. In comparison to the obese control group, the weight of the epididymal fat pad as a percentage of body weight decreased in the HV-HPMC group.

Additionally, the liver cholesterol and lipid concentrations as well as the liver weight were decreased in the HV-HPMC group. However, SREBP-1c or FAS gene expression in the liver was unaffected by HV-HPMC feeding. Between the Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose groups and the obese control, the content of acylcarnitines, a lipid intermediary in fatty acid -oxidation, was not changed, indicating no change in muscle fatty acid oxidation by HPMC.
