Update Garmin GPS Map - Step-by-Step
If you’re sick of yelling at Siri or stopping to look up an address, an onboard GPS unit comes in handy. Just say where you want to go and, boom, you’re on your way. However, your Garmin device must have an up-to-date list of all mapped roads and highways to be effective. We’ve all heard of a scenario where your GPS starts to lead you down a dark road that twists and turns until you hit a dead end.
The streets and routes are constantly changing, and if you don’t keep your GPS up to date, you will surely be that person sitting in the middle of nowhere cursing your dash. Fortunately, keeping your GPS unit up to date is easy, especially with Garmin’s Express software, which basically reduces you to connecting the device to your computer and letting the software work its magic. You can use Express if you have a Drive Assist, Zumo, Nuvi, or any other model in the Garmin line. Here’s an easy step-by-step guide on how to
Step 1: connect your device to your computer
Before beginning the update, connect your Garmin GPS device to a computer. To do this, remove it from your car, truck, or motorcycle and make sure the device is turned on. Using a mini USB cable, connect the GPS to your laptop and wait while the progress bar scrolls. If you connected the device before, the prompts should start automatically. If this is your first time, you may need to manually log into your Garmin account before starting.
Step 2: Install Garmin Express
Next, you will need to ensure that Garmin Express is installed on your computer by navigating to the Garmin Express download page and selecting Download for Windows or Download for Mac. Once the appropriate file is downloaded, click the install button and Follow the instructions on the screen. As mentioned above, Garmin Express works with all GPS units, including Drive, Drive Safe, Nuvi, and Zumo.
Step 3: Access or Purchase Updates
Now is the time to install your updates. If Garmin Express still hasn’t opened on your computer after installation, select it and make sure your Internet connection is working properly. Click Add a device and locate your GPS. The app will search for available updates and provide you with a list. Click Select All and keep your device connected while the updates install. Once completed, you will have all the apps available that are free or come standard with your device. If you did not purchase updates for life, you may need to purchase them at this time.
Step 4: Disconnect your Device
When you’re done installing the free updates (or you’ve bought something new), select Eject to safely disconnect your device and unplug the USB cable. Once unplugged, simply install your GPS back to the desired vehicle and rest assured that your instructions will be (hopefully) accurate.
